The class = Pure Experimentation: Stencilry $40
Just as the name implies, we’ll be conducting a full scale investigation into the art of stenciling. If you’ve seen my stencil work here and have wondered how it's done, put your seat belt on. I’m gonna show you! Both spray inks & spray paint will be covered. From stencil portraits to burst of rays we’re doing it ALL. From cutting your own stencils to using ready-made or commercial, I'll show you how I build a visual journal page from the ground up.
Class dates: April 10th – May 8th 4 weeks total
1 lesson and 7-9 videos per week (over an hours worth). You will have the option to watch these full screen with little loss in quality. In addition there is a downloadable PDF file for each lesson (average length = 20 pages)
This is not a class in “real time”, so you can work at your own pace. Think: correspondence course on crack. The only requirements are a fast computer & high-speed internet service (to process & watch the videos) and Adobe Acrobat Reader (free download you can easily find if your computer doesn’t already have it). Enrollment will begin in the next 10 days. A supply list & full access to the PURE EXPERIMENTATION class blog will be furnished within 24 hours of enrollment.
The videos and class blog will be available for 4 weeks AFTER the end of class. So you'll have until June 8th to watch all the videos. The videos are not available as download. In addition to the PDF's and VIDEOS, the class blog is another rich source of information & posts.
Registration for this class will close on April 24, 2009. If you miss out this time around, the exact same class will be offered again in August of 2009. Dates to be announced in July.
Got a question? Ask away! I'll answer in the comments section.

Hi,
I am so disappointed to have missed out on this class! It looks like just the thing I would have loved to try. Can I/we pre-register for the offering in August? Please, and maybe get the supply list so we can be gathering our stuff? I MUST find a way to get in - I NEED your instruction, LOL. Thanks.

Of course, I have found this class offering after it closed. Can You e-mail me as the next round of details becomes available? In July....
My post-40 brain just does not store details like it once did. Not only would I need to remember to get back here at the right time, it would also require the recall of how I navigated my way to this site.
A reminder would be most welcome.

I found your class through one of your current students. I am totally new to taking an online class. Will I be able to download the videos and class work so I can work on the class at any time in the future or do I need to complete the course in the four week time period following the end of your scheduled class date? Thanks so much!

Okay, first of all this class looks amazing! And so far I love your blog and your journals! However, i am out of town right now and can't start until after the 16th (give or take). I saw that this is a set your own pace king of thing. So can i start late? If so, when is te latest i can enroll? And how long will I have ti participate and view the classes? thanks!

I never sign up for a class unless I have a list of supplies first so that I know if I can even afford the supplies! It would be nice to have a list of these supplies so I can calculate if I can do it or not.

I just stumbled...or rather searched myself to your blog. I am very interested in the stencil class. Do you get the supply list after you sign up for the class? Since the class is at your own pace,do I have to start exactly on April 10th? I am only concerned about getting all the supplies together. Thanks

Hi Mary Ann~
I've been getting some orders from you stencilry class participants, and had to see what you've been doing lately. What a fabulous idea to do this global class! You've always had such creative ideas and techniques, so it is wonderful that you'll be sharing your knowledge and wisdom with others around the world!!! I wanted to answer a few questions about the burners that some of them have been asking...
The tips on the WallLenk burners are not quite as fine a point as the ones on my burners, so which would be better for them depends on how much detail they will need to cut in the stencils. The other difference is that the burner shank on mine is shorter, so it is easier to control to trace the designs. I've also heard from other people that the plastic handle gets hot, whereas my wooden one does not get too hot to hold.
Have fun with your creative ideas and projects!!

I found this stencil burner on mister art "WALL LENK CORPORATION Cutlass Stencil Cutting Kit"
http://www.misterart.com/g1799/Wall-Lenk-Corporation-Cutlass-Stencil-Cutting-Kit.htm
for $22 -- will it do for the class, or would you suggest another?

This sounds great - i'm really new to all this and been wandering about stenciling. I'm in the UK and struggling to find suppliers of great art supplies, like stencils and stamps ... and don't want to pay shipping prices from US websites. But if I can find the basics, like you've mentioned above, I'll definitely join in.

lorraine - 1 class per week in the form of a PDF document you can access via the Pure Experimentation blog. 4 classes total for the 4 weeks. 8-12 videos total. The videos will be spread out throughout the week, say fri/mon/wed. More videos because I'd much rather show than tell.

Squee! I'm off to Home Depot to stock up on spray paints and anything that looks like a potential stencil (already know I need to look for plastic gutter mesh...).
Can't wait for the class!

Will it be a weekly thing to try or 2X a week or daily for the 4 weeks? I've never done an on-line class before...also...does underwear with holes count as a stencil? What...too much information or 2 much 1st grade humor?
Posted by: Lorraine | Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 12:34 PM
Tina - good question. If you want the FULL MONTY of supplies including a stencil burner (the one I recommend is $29) and you want one good all-over wallpaper stencil ($30 and up) plus a variety of commercial stencils, a good alphabet stencil on plastic, paint, spray inks etc., it could run you $100. That's if money isn't an option.
If it is, I suggest getting 3 colors of spraypaint- b&w plus 1 color, NO spray ink, a good exacto w/ a pack of sharp blades, some stencil film (inexpensive), a cardboard stencil alphabet, and start rounding up things with holes to spray through: lace, doilies, sequin waste (punchinella), mesh bags the oranges come in, etc., This could set you back between $30-40
Bare bones/no dough list = exacto w/ pack of blades, 3 colors of the cheapest spraypaint (i get the kind that's under $2 at the home improvement store), stuff around the house to spray through (see above) the cheapest alphabet/number stencil on the planet. Under $20 (You can cut the stencils out on cardstock instead of stencil film.)
I would shoot for the middle of the road version. Start looking at every single thing in your environment and its potential to become a possible stencil. If it's got holes...... Gather what you can. I started with VERY LITTLE and gradually added on.

krylon H2O latex is great.

Nancy - I'm almost finished with the class outline detailing exactly what we'll be doing in each class. I'm also putting a supply list on it. You'll have plenty of time to get what you need, but I'll be happy to send the list out to you once I've finished it if you plan to enroll in the class anyway. Just email me. Naturally when one starts something new - like stenciling - there is some cost involved in getting supplies, but not all are necessary. The spraypaint is much less expensive than the spray inks and goes much further. I buy the cheapest available at any home improvement center. I've also ordered online. They just remove the caps and you reattach them (easy) once they arrive. Here's a link:
http://www.misterart.com/g973/Krylon-Spray-Enamels.htm
Haven't tried these, but they're awfully cute. Get the aerosol:
http://www.misterart.com/g1014/Krylon-Short-Cuts.htm
I was going to try the H2O line of latex spray paint by Krylon, but a fellow stenciler has just let me know it stinks in the stencil department.
Here's a link to the Maya Mist spray inks:
http://store.scrapbook.com/maromamisp.html
Search on the internet you may find them cheaper. I would get 3 basic colors such as charcoal, red, and one other. Maybe pick up 1 of the Adirondack inks too. They have rich bright colors, but are inferior to the MAYA MISTS for stenciling. Your mileage may vary. The spray bottle clogs and the spray cap sticks, they also don't dry quickly (heat gun solves this problem though)

hope this helps!

Can I get an estimate on the cost of supplies? Let's say I don't have anything needed for this class. Approximately how much would I have to spend?
I'm so excited about this possibility and thrilled that it will be so affordable to enroll.

OOOO EEE!! Can't wait, hope I have a little cash in the paypal account by then... I will figure something out..
Posted by: Gwen Delmore | Saturday, March 14, 2009 at 06:55 AM
I'm really looking forward to this. And glad you're accepting paypal... see you there! Oh.... I don't have ANY access to spray paint or spray inks. If spray inks are not under pressure, i.e. in an aerosol can, I can order them on the internet -- in which case, could you reveal the details/brands, etc. in advance? Or suggest an alternative?
